A Glimpse into the Fight Against Cancer;

Cancer is a disease that occurs when cells in the body grow and divide uncontrollably, forming masses called tumors. Normally, our body’s cells grow, divide, and die in an orderly manner, but in cancer, this process is disrupted. This can happen in any part of the body, and while some tumors are benign (non-cancerous), others are malignant (cancerous) and can spread to other parts of the body, a process known as metastasis.

Cancer isn't a single disease but a group of over 100 related diseases. Common types include breast cancer, cervical cancer, prostate cancer, and lung cancer. Some cancers develop silently, making regular checkups and early detection essential.

For instance, cervical cancer—one of the leading causes of death among Ugandan women—is often caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is preventable through vaccination. Breast cancer, another common type, can often be caught early through regular self-examinations and screenings.

According to the World Health Organization, cancer is the second leading cause of death globally, claiming nearly 10 million lives each year. That means cancer causes one death every six seconds. Without timely action, cancer-related deaths are projected to rise dramatically in the coming decades by 47%. In Uganda, the burden of cancer is rising, with an estimated 35,968 new cases diagnosed annually, leading to approximately 24,629 deaths each year.

Cancer is not just a disease; it is a global crisis that impacts millions of families every year. The Uganda Christian University (UCU) Cancer Society stands as a symbol of hope in the fight against this devastating illness. Comprising dedicated students, professionals, and volunteers, the society is committed to empowering cancer patients, educating communities, and driving transformative change across Uganda.

The UCU Cancer Society embodies a holistic approach to combating cancer through these key pillars:

  • Financial Assistance: Supporting patients who cannot afford life-saving treatment and medication.
  • Counseling Services: Providing emotional and psychological support to cancer patients and their families.
  • Awareness Campaigns: Educating communities about the importance of early detection and cancer prevention strategies.
  • Community Outreach: Partnering with organizations like the Uganda Red Cross to conduct health screenings and workshops, including outreach to churches caring for deaf children and visits to the UCI Care Homes at Mulago.

In a bid to reach underserved communities; this year, the society partnered with the Uganda Red Cross to bring hope to a church supporting deaf children. Through this initiative, they offered cancer education and screenings tailored to this often-overlooked demographic. They also visited UCI Care Homes at Mulago, where they shared moments of encouragement and support with patients undergoing treatment.

Cancer prevention starts with making informed choices:

  • Healthy Living: Eat a balanced diet, exercise regularly, and avoid tobacco and excessive alcohol consumption.
  • Vaccination: Protect yourself from HPV and Hepatitis B, viruses linked to cervical and liver cancer, respectively.
  • Screening: Regular screenings for cervical, breast, and prostate cancer can save lives.

Testing and treatment services are available at:

  • Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI), Mulago: The national referral center for cancer diagnosis and treatment.
  • Regional Cancer Centers: Located in Arua, Gulu, Mbale, and Mbarara.
  • Local Clinics: Many offer screening services for common cancers.

Fadhul Usama, a UCU medical student and the vice president of the society, emphasizes:

"Early detection is the most powerful weapon we have in the fight against cancer. With awareness and action, we can save lives."

The UCU Cancer Society invites everyone to join their mission:

  • Donate: Every contribution helps provide essential services to cancer patients.
  • Volunteer: Your time and skills can make a real difference.
  • Raise Awareness: Share their message and resources with your networks.

Together, we can turn the tide against cancer and create a healthier, brighter future for Uganda because while cancer may have started the fight, together, we will finish it.
